Ficksburg Pump Station

We recently completed a Turn-Key Pump Station at the Ficksburg Water Treatment Works, located at the South African border between the Free State Province and Lesotho. The scope of works entailed a complete Turn-Key Pump Station that delivers 270 [l/s] @ 13 [bar] to supply potable water to the town reservoir and subsequently gravitate to supply the community. Our battery limits were set for all items mechanical and electrical within the Pump Station, from our flow meter onwards the civil contractor handled the new HDPE pipeline running all the way up to the reservoir.

Our design consisted of THREE Pump Sets operating in a Duty/Duty/Standby configuration running automatically by means of telemetry signals received from the town reservoir. We incorporated the following safety features in order to run the system automatically without the need for an operator 24/7 located at the Pump Station:

  • Low-Level Protection in the Suction Reservoir,
  • Pressure Monitoring on the Discharge of each Pump Set,
  • Flow Monitoring on the Discharge Manifold of the Pump Station,
  • Temperature Monitoring on the Drive and Non-Drive end of each Pump Set,
  • Thermistors on each of the THREE 250 [kW] Motors and
  • Overload Protection on each of the THREE 250 [kW] Motors.

The project resulted in a couple of obstacles that needed to be overcome to result in success, with the most notable one being to strip the old pump station, i.e. pipework, valves, plinths, pipe supports, electrical MCC, cables, etc. and install the new pump station in only ONE WEEK. We planned and executed accordingly and the project resulted in a huge success.

We would like to thank our whole team for putting in a massive effort on behalf of Clarity Installations.

Within the first week of operation, the Pump Station delivered a total of 50 Million Liters of Water to the town Reservoir!!!
